Overview
The Department of Earth Sciences at CUI Abbottabad offers 4-years Bachelor, 2-years Master, and 3-5 years PhD programs. The course work of these programs is designed to include maximum topics of applied geosciences with a focus on natural resources exploration, natural hazard assessment, engineering and environmental geology. Apart from university education, the Department of Earth Sciences arranges geological field trips in the Salt Range, Trans Indus Ranges, Hazara region and northern areas for a better understanding of the geological processes and their outcomes. Furthermore, the department offers a variety of specializations in Petroleum Geology, Sedimentology, Structural Geology and Tectonics, Neotectonics, Engineering Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology, Economic Geology, Applied Geophysics, and Geochemistry. These specializations are completed with the help of diverse, qualified and experienced faculty, laboratories, modern equipment and field works.
The unique geographic location of the department in Abbottabad provides the students with an opportunity to learn about the geological processes, history and implications in an active mountainous setting. As an Earth Scientist, you may be involved in the search of hydrocarbons, minerals, and water resources. You may also be engaged in the remediation of environmental hazards, and prevention and/or prediction of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, erosion and floods.
