Overview
Computer engineering is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science required to develop computer systems. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual micro-processors, personal computers, and super computers, to circuit design. This field of engineering not only focuses on how computer systems themselves work, but also how they integrate into the larger picture.
Computer engineers are usually required to write software and firmware for embedded microcontrollers, designing VLSI chips, analog sensors, mixed signal circuit boards, and operating systems. Computer engineers are also suited for robotics research, which relies heavily on using digital systems and image processing techniques to control and monitor electrical systems like actuators/motors and sensors.
Program Description
Bachelor of Science in Electrical (Computer) Engineering is one of the most versatile programs offering degree in electrical engineering, giving students the core knowledge and adequate breath within the filed, the emphasis being on computer related subjects with specialized courses on computer design, digital electronics and computer science.
During the first year, reinforcement in science and mathematics is provided. During the second and third year, graduates will be reinforced with the Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering fields. In the final year, reinforcements on Electronics and Computer Engineering are intensified.
Application and admission

Career prospects
Computer engineering branched off from the larger specialty of electrical engineering. In the past few decades, with electrical engineers staying focused on the skills of building actual computing devices, computer engineering has emerged as a unique specialty.
Computer engineers now focus more of their skills on designing useful software applications that take advantage of widely available hardware tools. They have detailed knowledge of circuits, electronics, digital logic, and hardware design in addition to mastery of software design and implementation. Furthermore, a computer engineer can have expertise in signal processing and communication systems for the broader application of computer hardware and software design, ranging from standalone embedded computers for intelligent sensing and control of physical systems. Computer engineers make important practical contributions in many other areas, as outlined below:
- Catering the on going improvements in computer systems performance for general purpose, scientific, and multimedia applications,
- Implementing increasingly sophisticated single-chip embedded computing systems for a variety of consumer and industrial applications,
- Designing reliable software systems for different industries
- Designing more robust solutions for computer and network security
- Developing innovative applications of wireless communication capabilities in computers and other electronic devices.
Thus computer engineers have a great demand in different industries at national and international level. PTCL, WAPDA, PAL, ENGRO, PTV, PIA, Siemens, Philips, all mobile companies, etc are some of the examples of industries where computer engineers can start their career
